DE Destroyer Escort (1,000 - 1,750 tons)
Destroyer escorts are small, fast, and maneuverable warships intended to engage missiles, strikecraft, and other small threats. Despite what the name implies, it is not uncommon for destroyer escorts to operate independently or in small task groups. Command of a destroyer escort is typically granted to newly promoted commanders (OF-4).

CA Heavy Cruiser (7,000 - 11,000 tons)
Heavy cruisers are large, fast warships designed as designed to be the primary combatants in a fleet, or operate as a flagship for a battle group. Neither the UN or Federation currently operates any heavy cruiser. Command of a cruiser would likely be reserved for a senior captain (OF-5) or a commodore (OF-6), or above.

BB Battleship (11,000+ tons)
Battleships are the largest warships, and serve as heavy combatants and flagships of a fleet. No battleships are known to exist, though it is speculated the Federation's premier shipyard has expanded to a large enough capacity to construct one. Battleships would almost certainly be commanded by a flag officer ranked Commodore (OF-6) or above.
FC Corvette
Corvette is a designation operated by the Federation Navy, roughly comparable to the UN's destroyer escort.
