The 'York' Class Freighter is the first generation of freighters used by the United Nation's Merchant Marine and McKiernan Transport Corporation.
Background
With the launch of the Eurasian Federation's Krivak class space vessales, in conjunction with Kapitan Tamryn Fedotov's legendary tour of the solar system, it was decided that something was needed to be done to secure U.N prestige into the early space race. While plans were drawn up for survey vessels, it was decided that a permanent settlement on The Moon would be the first step towards a greater U.N presence in space. With that decided, a short range transport would be needed to haul infrastructure to the Moon. Thus plans were drawn up for the first generation York. At first little more then three chemical boosters strapped to a box, the first York was nevertheless a great success, completing many trips to the moon and Earth hauling infrastructure needed to the burgeoning Tranquility settlement.
Second Generation
Almost immediately after the York slipped free of it's moorings, it was already obsolete. Within five months of its launch, Nuclear Thermal Engine research would be completed on the first generation of Trans-Newtonian engines. In addition, Dr. MagicBoots research into the Cargo Handling System would also be completed two months after the research on new engines would finish. The United Nation's Executive Council therefore decided to forgo constructing anymore generation 1 Yorks, in favor of holding out for the second generation. McKiernan Transport Corporation however, eager to enter into the lucrative infrastructure trade commissioned their own generation 1 York, the SS Sycamore
After months of research, development and the shifting around of modular ship building parts, the I.S.S was finally ready to build a next generation York at the end of 2026. Christened the Leeds, this ship would join the York as one of the two freighters currently in the U.N Merchant Marine.
Meanwhile, over the next several years, McKiernan Transport Corporation would construct four generation 2 Yorks, bringing the numbers up to five. The York would also be converted into a generation 2 York, bringing the total number of Generation 2 Yorks to six.
