To date, Engineering Brigades have engaged in three military operations. The first was the defense of Federation holdings on Mars against the Brotherhood of Free Mars during the Mars Crisis. Due to the surprise nature of the attack and the overwhelming numbers employed by the BFM, the three brigades surrendered after little over a week in fighting. The second were the first and second Belnar automata incursions at the Martian Belnar ruins.

The engineering brigade is five times larger than most other individual TNE formations, which are all battallions. Due to the fact individual units cannot be split up for transport, this has been the main driving force behind giving the Lictor class troop transport the capacity to lift an entire brigade in one go.

Engineering brigades are also the only effective way of exploring and recovering ancient ruins. Currently, all three UN engineering brigades, and presumably all Federation engineering brigades as well, have been trained for this express purpose and shipped to the Belnar Imperium ruins on Mars.

In combat, they can serve as reasonably good defensive troops, certainly compared to conventional infantry, but they would be quickly overwhelmed by sufficient numbers, and would not be able to stand up against comparable numbers of combat-focussed TNE units.
