Operation Red Thunder was the name of the planned ground war on Mars to combat the increasingly hostile Brotherhood of Free Mars. However, it was ultimately scrapped when the UN chose to support the Brotherhood.

Background

Due to the Brotherhood's sudden appearance and its acquisition of several defecting Federation ground forces, the UN created Red Thunder to counter any hostile actions by the BFM. While this operation dictated the UN's policy towards the BFM for the majority of the Mars Crisis, the operation was ultimately scrapped when the UN chose to support the BFM.

Goals

In order of importance:

  • Protection of UN civillians and holdings on Mars
  • Protection of the Belnar ruins on Mars
  • Removal of the Brotherhood of Free Mars as a credible threat to the safety United Nations holdings on Mars
  • Liberation of Federation citizens and holdings occupied by the Brotherhood of Free Mars

Secondary Orders

All Units

  • Hostilities are to be opened once all assigned ground units are in position.
  • If feasible, Soman and other high-ranking BFM members are to be captured alive for questioning and trial.
  • Surrendering BFM combatants are to be detained and treated as PoWs in accordance to the Geneva treaty, UN law and international law.
  • Civillian casualties, regardless of nationality, are to be minimised.


Orbital Assets

  • Orbital Bombardment is authorised if more lives are estimated to be saved by doing so than will be lost as collatteral damage, or if ordered by Red Thunder command.
  • The International Red Cross is to be given full access to surplus transport space aboard Lictor class troop transports.


Spec Ops

  • Gather intel for operation Red Thunder
  • Run counterespionage against BFM infiltrators
  • Recover and copy and Federation databases found during the operation
  • Report on any other useful information encountered during the operation
