The Berlin class of cruisers is the United Nations Interplanetary Navy's primary offensive combat space craft.

Project MOSCOW

In early January 2028, the UN received a shock when the Federation unilaterally annexed Saturn and its environs out to 200m km. At the same time, the Federation launched the first craft of its Moskva class, instantly eclipsing the UN's space-capable combat forces.

In response, the UN leadership solicited bids from naval shipbuilding concerns and decided on a design created by UNIN junior officer Commander Veloxyll. With the internal designation "Project MOSCOW", development resources were showered on the project, leading to the first hull UNS Berlin (CA-1) being laid down less than eighteen months later and completed only five months after that.

Armament

The Berlin-class's armament consists of one large void torpedo tube (manufactured by Bofors) and five small point defense launch tubes. The former is designed to launch missiles massing up to 20,000 kg, and the Berlin's standard loadout equips it with twelve SBM-5A Hammer Cruise Missiles, though these are slowly being replaced throughout the Berlin fleet with the longer-ranged and generally improved SSM-9A Exocet Anti-Ship Missile. The point defense tubes, capable of accommodating missiles up to 2500 kg, was originally designed to launch the SIM-3A Wasp Interceptor Missile‎, but this missile was quickly phased out in favor of the SSM-6A Hornet Anti-Ship Missile. The standard loadout calls for 120 of these dual-purpose missiles.

Sensors

The Berlin-class's sensor suite is designed to complement its armament. It carries a UN/STY-6 Mercury Thermal Array passive thermal sensor which, if directed against another Berlin-class cruiser, would be able to detect it at 3m km. Its active sensor suite includes an UN/SGY-5 Overwatch Tracking Array long-distance search sensor for detecting ships 1000 tons and over, and a UN/SGS-4 Warbler Missile Warning Sensor missile warning sensor for picking up the emissions of incoming missiles.

To direct its offensive armament, the Berlin-class carries a UN/SGM-3 Aegis Missile Defense Control missile fire control for directing the point defense launchers and a more powerful UN/SGM-7 Oversight Torpedo Director torpedo director for control of the void torpedo tube.

Updates

Before the last of the Berlin-class cruisers was out of the shipyard, plans were made for a modernized version, which eventually came to be known as the Berlin II. This upgrade replaces the nuclear thermal engines of the original design with more powerful Pratt and Whitney 40000M-E100 Nuclear Pulse Engines. The sensor suite also gets an upgrade via the replacement of the "Overwatch" with the UN/SGY-9 Jove Tracking Array (more than doubling active sensor range). The "Oversight" torpedo director is upgraded to the UN/SGM-11 Arquebus Targeting Array, which allows the Berlin II to take advantage of longer-ranged missiles.

In order to make room for some of this new hardware, the "Warbler" missile detection sensor is removed. This was viewed as an acceptable loss, as fleet doctrine currently dictates that Berlin IIs must always be escorted by at least one Surigao-class DE. The Berlin II does retain its "Aegis" point defense missile fire control, allowing it to defend itself from incoming missiles, provided a Surigao is providing active detection.
