History
The Ground Forces of the United Nations initially composed of 75 Low Tech Infantry Brigades, equal in number and quality to their Federation counterparts. While they are organized and fall under the purview of the UNIN, the actual command of all these forces currently falls to Lt. General berryjon.
So far, the Army has been slowly reforming itself into Engineering Brigades and Mobile Infantry Battalions.
Organization
Trans-Newtonian ground units are potent formations wielding combat capabilities not possible in the 20th and early 21st centuries. These ground units have a hierarchy of sub-units, though there is not yet a doctrinal framework in place for higher levels of organization than the battalion, which at the current time is the fundamental unit of ground combat in the Trans-Newtonian era.
Battalion
A battlion, usually commanded by a UNGF colonel, consists of about 500 combat personnel and 2000 support personnel. It is divided into four mission companies and one HQ/support company.
Company
A mission company, usually commanded by a UNGF captain, contains five combat platoons and a HQ/support platoon for that company, totaling 125 combat personnel and 400 support personnel. One of the combat platoons is a heavy weapons / artillery platoon. Another combat platoon consists of organic air elements (CAS, short-range transport, etc). The other three combat platoons are "mission" platoons, the exact TOE of which depends on the type of battalion.
A HQ/support company contains the battalion's CO and his/her staff as part of the "command platoon." Other platoons within the HQ company include the medical platoon, signals platoon, logistics platoon, special weapons platoon, and medium-range transport platoon. This company generally falls under the direct command of the battlion's XO, often a UNGF major.
Platoon
A mission platoon generally consists of 25 combat personnel, 60 support personnel and attendant ground transport, arranged into two squads. Mobile Infantry mission platoons (the only kind currently active in UN formations) generally contain power-armored infantry and light IFVs/APCs. The platoon is usually commanded by a UNGF lieutenant, with the assistance of one or more NCOs (sergeant or higher, typically at least one per squad).
The heavy weapons/artillery platoon also consists of 25 combat personnel and 60 support personnel. It usually has access to at least a set of platoon level mortars or howitzers and several medium and heavy machine guns. It is commanded by a lieutenant and one or more gunnery sergeants.
The air platoon (usually called a squadron by UNGF Aviation) consists of a number of air elements, both combat and transport. In a mobile infantry battalion, these elements are light CAS and recon aircraft, as well as short-distance airlift vehicles. It is somewhat unique among the platoons in that all the combat pilots are officers in the UNGF Aviation Corps, usually 2nd Lieutenant or higher.
The HQ/support platoon contains the company's CO and his/her staff, usually consisting of about 100 support personnel. It also includes signals elements, an emergency response medical team, and company-level logistics elements.
The special platoons attached directly to the HQ/support company of a battalion serve various specialized purposes, such as hospital operations; logistics stocking, tracking, and distribution; signals and battalion intelligence; battalion-level special weapons (tank destroyers, demolitions, etc); and medium-range troop and equipment transports.
